Your floor does more than just be “the thing that you step on”, it’s the base layer of everything you live on. Choose wisely, and your home will feel polished, comfortable, and low maintenance. Choose poorly, and every spill, scratch, or moisture spike becomes a headache. In Singapore, where humidity and your struggle for practicality are constant companions, the flooring decision matters.

In case you wonder what makes each type of flooring great, what to watch out for, and how much you’re realistically going to pay? Here’s our breakdown of vinyl, tiles, engineered wood, and marble.

Vinyl Flooring: That one steady friend you turn to

Vinyl comes in planks, tiles (LVT), or sheets. It’s sleek, has loads of design options, and usually kind to wallets.

Pros:

  • Very water-resistant and humidity-friendly. Unlike natural wood, vinyl doesn’t warp easily in Singapore’s climate.
  • Sweep, mop lightly, done. No grout lines to scrub in most types, making it low maintenance.
  • Many designs mimic wood, stone, or tile, so you get style without the cost (or cold feel) of real stone.
  • It’s softer underfoot than tiles. Good for comfort, especially in living rooms or bedrooms, or those that resonate with the princess and the pea.

Cons:

  • Can scratch, gouge, or dent if heavy furniture is dragged over it. It’d be best to use felt pads under legs.
  • Direct sunlight can fade some vinyl over time, (Singapore struggles amiright). UV protection or curtains help, just like how we use sunscreen.
  • Some vinyls have VOC emissions initially, so make sure it’s a good quality product with low emissions.
  • Most importantly, if the subfloor isn’t flat or well-prepared, vinyl will show bumps or lumps. It could cost extra to fix the subfloor, and this is usually seen in our old HDB resale flats.

Cost & Longevity:

  • Vinyl material + installation tends to be much cheaper than tiles or wood, making it the go-to for budget renovations.
  • High-quality vinyl can last 10 to 20+ years if maintained well, but of course It depends a lot on your foot traffic, installation, and exposure.

Tiles: Classic, Durable & Cooler than you ( temperature wise)

Tiles, be it ceramic or porcelain, are everywhere in Singapore for good reasons. Durability, its cooling factor, and design variety.

Pros:

  • Very durable and resistant to water and stains. It’s ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, and entryways.
  • Stays cooler, which helps with Singapore’s heat. Good tile + good underfloor prep = nice comfort underfoot.
  • Tons of patterns, sizes, and finishes. You can go simple with solid colours, or bold like patterned tiles for feature walls or floors.

Cons:

  • Cold and hard. Not always comfy for long periods standing unless you use rugs or mats.
  • With tiles, comes grout lines. It’ll get dirty no matter how hard you try and will need maintenance.
  • It’s not the most pressure resistant and can crack if heavy things drop on them or subfloor shifts.
  • Installation and material cost, especially premium porcelain or large format tiles, can be higher.

Cost & Longevity:

  • For “normal” porcelain or ceramic tile flooring in Singapore, tile + labour runs about SGD $9 – $19 per square foot total, material plus installation.
  • For premium natural stone tiles (like marble or granite), cost can jump to SGD $18 – $40+ per square foot, depending on type, cutting, finishing.
  • Tiles, if well laid and maintained, can last decades.

Engineered Wood: Elegant Without the Drama of Solid Timber

If you want wood’s warmth but not its maintenance headaches, engineered wood is a compelling option.

Pros:

  • Very stable even under Singapore’s humidity because it’s constructed with multiple layers that resist expansion and contraction.
  • It offers the authentic wood look and feel, and can often be refinished depending on wear layer thickness.
  • Warmer underfoot and more forgiving in feel compared to stone or tile.

Cons:

  • Not fully waterproof, so spills must be cleaned quickly. It’s also generally maintained by a wet mop only.
  • Premium versions and thicker wear layers cost more, and they’re generally more expensive than good vinyl or basic tiles.
  • It’s still prone to scratching, especially in high-traffic areas unless protected.

Cost & Longevity:

  • Depending on brand, thickness, and type, engineered wood can cost significantly more than vinyl or standard tiles.
  • With proper care, engineered wood can last 20 – 30 years+ with refinishing if the wear layer is sufficient.

Marble: The Statement Flooring (Bring Your Gloves)

Marble floors instantly elevate a home, but they come with expectations and maintenance.

Pros:

  • The visual beauty and sheer unique appearance. No two slabs are the same, be it the veining, colour or texture. It’ll make a house feel truly luxurious.
  • Natural cooling effect, great for hot tropical homes.
  • It’ll even work as your home’s selling factor by adding strong aesthetic and increases resale value.

Cons:

  • Marble is very porous. It’ll need sealing, and careful cleaning since acids or some cleaners damage marble.
  • Scratches and etches are more visible, heavy objects or grit under your shoes can damage it.
  • Being upfront, Cost is high. Marbles are expensive and labour is more intensive with cutting and polishing.
  • Upkeep must be part of your plan to retain its appeal.

Cost & Longevity:

  • Marble flooring material cost in Singapore can vary widely, often between SGD $15 to $70+ per square foot, depending on grade, finish, thickness.
  • Labour + installation adds up; installation labour (for marble) tends to range about SGD $3 to $7 per square foot or more depending on pattern, subfloor work, etc.
  • If well maintained, marble can last many decades, and even develop beautiful patinas over time.

Singapore-Specific Factors to Watch Out For

Because Singapore isn’t “anywhere,” there are local quirks your flooring choice should survive:

  • Humidity & Moisture: Natural wood and sensitive materials suffer in high humidity. Even tiles can get mould in grout lines or wet bathrooms.
  • Sunlight / UV Exposure: Balconies or rooms with full sun need flooring that won’t fade or warp under UV.
  • Wear & Traffic: If you have kids, pets, regular guests, or if you’re a stress redecorator, you’ll want flooring that resists scratches and dents.
  • Subfloor Prep: Many hidden costs come from preparing the base floor, levelling, repairing concrete, removing old floor, waterproofing. These can make cheaper flooring choices cost more overall if ignored.
  • Slip Resistance: Especially in bathrooms or kitchens, gloss or polished stone can be a slip risk. Choose finishes with grip or textured surfaces.

There’s no perfect flooring, it’s about trade-offs. Vinyl gives you affordability and flexibility. Tiles offer durability and cooling. Engineered wood brings warmth without all the warping fuss. Marble gives you grandeur, but you pay for that beauty over time.

When you pick flooring, think long term: your lifestyle, your usage, your patience for maintenance, and how each material deals with Singapore’s humidity and sun. (Because that’s not going away.) Floor well, live well. It’s the base of more than just your shoes.
